German stages, explained
Five numbers on the tin. One is yours.
German formula follows your baby's age in stages. Pick the one that matches today — the tins underneath are the ones you would actually buy.
PRE · from birth. Lactose is the only carbohydrate, no starch — as light as breast milk. Complete for the whole first year, and the usual pick beside breastfeeding.
Stage 1 · from birth. The same base as PRE plus a little starch, so it is creamier and keeps a hungry baby full a bit longer. Also complete for the whole first year.
Stage 2 · from 6 months. Follow-on milk for when solids begin. More iron — EU rules ask for it in follow-on milk — and more energy. Never before the sixth month.
Stage 3 · from 10 months. For a baby eating two or three meals a day. Creamier, more iron, still a bottle in the morning and at bedtime.
Stage 1+ · from 1 year. A toddler milk, not a formula: less protein than cow's milk, with iron, vitamin D and omega-3. One or two cups a day beside meals — optional.
Stage 2+ · from 2 years. The toddler milk for the second year on: still less protein than cow's milk, with iron, vitamin D and omega-3 for a growing child.
